A Clinical Study of Traumatic Subcutaneous Liver Injuries

Abstract
Author studied a clinical review on 31 cases of traumatic rupture of the normal liver, which
were treated surgically at the Pusan National University Hospital during 12 years from Jan, 1958,
to July, 1970.
1. Eighteen cases of liver were due to the traffic accident, blow and kick was 10 cases
and falling was 3 cases.
2. Twenty four cases of liver injuries occured in the right lobe, 7 cases occured in the left
lobe. Nineteen cases of this series accompanied other injuries of chest or abdominal structures.
3. On physical examination, there was found to have generalized abdominal pain in 27 cases,
abdominal distention in 9 cases and generalized abdominal rigidity in 2 cases.
4. Blood counts revealed hemoglobin below 9.9§·% in 24 cases and leucocytosis above 11,000
in 26 cases.
5. Among 31 abdominal paracentesis, those revealed 21 positive intraperitoneal blood.
6. In severity of liver injuries, the laceration was 23 cases, the rupture was 8 cases.
7. The mortality rate was 29.7%.
8. The best treatment for rupture of the liver was primary suture of partial segmental resection.
